1986: The Foundation The DNA of Text The Universe LLC wasn't formulated in a corporate design studio. It was built through four decades of literal blood, sweat, and sawdust. The journey started in 1986 in St. Louis. Leaving a broken school system behind at 16, the only path forward was a local construction crew. That is where the real education began: mastering bricklaying, pouring and finishing concrete, executing flawless rough and finish carpentry, and learning the strict codes of professional plumbing and electrical.

2006: The California Pivot & Network Television After twenty years of tearing houses down to the bone and rebuilding them from the ground up, the pursuit of bigger opportunities led to a relocation to Los Angeles in 2006. That extensive hands-on expertise quickly caught the attention of network television.

During the filming of Bravo's Top Design, a severe table saw accident resulted in eight stitches to the thumb. Instead of walking away, it was a trip straight from the hospital back to the set to finish the job. That relentless work ethic and elite carpentry skill led the team to win the entire season finale. That success snowballed into becoming the Lead General Contractor for other HGTV’s hit shows like Brother vs. Brother. Those high-pressure projects laid the groundwork to officially establish Home Helper Ed (California General Contractor License #962536), a renovation and repair business still actively operating today.

2013: The Origin of "Text The Universe"Before manufacturing protective gear, the goal was to solve a completely different problem in the trades: finding work and sourcing materials. In 2013, a concept was developed for a subscription-based app designed to act as a human search engine. The app would "text blast" project leads directly to local contractors, and allow those contractors to text blast suppliers to hunt down specific, hard-to-match construction products.

To launch this massive communication network, the company was officially incorporated as "Text The Universe LLC." It quickly became clear that developing the app would require a massive infusion of capital funding. While the software project didn't get off the ground, the LLC was already established and waiting for its true purpose.

2015: The Necessity & The Pivot Forty years of residential service work takes an undeniable physical toll. In 2015, out of a strict necessity for real, job-site knee protection, the first prototype was invented: a heavy-duty kneeling pad originally called the "ToeSaver Kneeling Pad." Instead of shutting down the app company, Text The Universe LLC was successfully pivoted into an e-commerce storefront to sell the new invention. While the ToeSaver had early success, the digital landscape at the time made direct-to-consumer sales incredibly difficult for small businesses, and the project was temporarily shelved.

The Hail Mary & The Evolution Years later, facing a turning point, a final "Hail Mary" prototype was built using leftover shop supplies. This new iteration was an attachable, elevated version of the original pad. After taking it to a trade show and posting a few videos online, the overwhelming viral response made one thing perfectly clear: the trades desperately needed a full lower-leg kneeling pad.

Extensive engineering followed. Using custom router bits, precise cavities were carved into the foam to mold from the knees all the way down to the instep of the foot. This wrapped design locked the leg in, significantly reducing slipping and shifting while simultaneously reducing pressure on the feet. The ToeKnee Crawler was officially born.

The Attic Epiphany: Engineering the TKC Extreme The ultimate test came during an electrical job in a residential attic. Balancing on ceiling joists is notoriously unsteady, and dragging plywood across obstacles isn't always a viable option. A piece of plywood glued to the bottom of the Original ToeKnee Crawler provided amazing comfort and stability, sparking the next major evolution.

To make the unit lightweight and functional for the attic, the design utilized 8-pound dense XLPE foam on the bottom and soft 2-pound density XLPE for the main body. When that proved still too flexible on the joists, the ultimate structural solution was engineered: routing out cavities to accept half-inch lightweight structural rods across the almost full length of the 19.5-inch base. This kept the product soft and lightweight but made it perfectly rigid. The extended base could now be planted directly on a joist with zero flex and the platform extendsion expanding the landing base, creating a rock-solid platform. This became our flagship TKC ToeKnee Crawler Extreme or in short the TKC Extreme.
